Penny Lane is a documentary filmmaker (and occasional video artist, writer, curator and professor of film, video and new media art).
Her work has shown at Rotterdam, AFI FEST, Impakt, Antimatter, San Francisco International Film Festival, Images, DOXA, Oberhausen, FLEX FEST, Media That Matters Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Women in the Director's Chair, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, Impakt, DOXA, Dallas Video Festival, MoMA's "Documentary Fortnight," Santa Fe Art Institute, Cucalorus, Ruffino Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City, Director's Lounge Berlin, and many other venues.
Penny has been awarded grants from Creative Capital, Cinereach, TFI Documentary Fund, Jerome Foundation, LEF Foundation, NYSCA, Experimental Television Center, IFP and Puffin Foundation. She was named "Most Badass!" at the Iowa City Documentary Film Festival in 2009. She's also won other awards at places like AFI FEST, New Orleans Film Festival, FLEX, Athens Film and Video Festival, Luksuz Festival of Cheap Film, Choice USA and Carolina Film/Video Festival.
Her 2005 documentary film THE ABORTION DIARIES has become an important organizing and educational tool across the nation. THE ABORTION DIARIES has screened in 42 states & worldwide at over 250 different community venues, ranging from bars to art centers to clinics to colleges, and also on Yes! Television and Free Speech TV.
She got her MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her BA in American Culture and Media Studies at Vassar College.
Her writings & interviews have been published in INCITE! Journal of Experimental Media & Radical Aesthetics, The Brooklyn Rail, and On The Issues.
She has taught film, video and new media arts at Bard College, Hampshire College and Williams College.
From 2010 to 2011, she programmed the monthly Flaherty NYC series at Anthology Film Archives, showcasing risk-taking nonfiction films.
In 2010, Penny and her husband Brian L. Frye formed a production company called Dipper Films specializing in making documentariy films that are smart and fun. These days, Penny is currently hard at work on her first three feature length documentaries: OUR NIXON, NUTS! and THE RULES OF EVIDENCE.
